Whale and Dolphin Watching Richards Bay

Long flippers
A humpback's enormous flippers, at 4 to 5 m in length, are a third as long as the body.

Unique flipper and tails
The unique designs each whale have has greatly aided in studying the humpbacks, offering a reliable way to identify individual whales.

Rorquals
Broad and stretchable grooves extend along the humpback’s underside from the throat to the navel. These grooves allow the whale to hold, in a single mouthful, thousands of litres of water teeming with krill and small fish.

Breach
With majestic splendor, a humpback soars in a beautiful aerial display.

Proud display
Breaching is when most or all of the whale's body leaves the water.

Humpback hijinx
Humpback whales can use their powerful fluke (or tail fin) to launch themselves out of the water.

Whale tail
The humpback’s tail, or fluke, is about 4 m wide.

Fluke-print?
As with human fingerprints, the ridges and patterns on the underside of the fluke are unique to each creature.

Protected numbers
Worldwide population is estimated at 35,000 individuals.

Whale curiosity
The boat is only allowed to get so close. Once stopped, the whales will usually swim over to investigate the boat.

Strike a pose
Humpbacks like to engage in slapping the surface of the water with its flippers and fluke.

Chance of getting sprayed? Good
In a maneuver called “breaching”, the humpback makes spectacular leaps out of the water, falling back with a great splash.

Easy harbour launch
With the boat being launched from the harbour, children and elderly can participate. Restrictions apply.

Dual breach
Aerial displays can be very energetic, with whales competing for the best heights.

Diving deep
When diving, the whale gracefully arches its back and displays the underside of its V-shaped tail, which resembles the wings of a giant butterfly.

Up close and personal
With all sea mammals exhibiting a natural curiosity, they love to come and check the strange humans on the boat.

Distinguished guests
Identifiable by its massive size and long flippers, this species is found throughout the world, from the Arctic to the Antarctic.
